Implications of Abundance Gradients in Intracluster Gas

چکیده
Analysis of spatially resolved ASCA spectra of the intracluster gas in Abell 496 confirms that metal abundances increase toward the center. We also find spatial gradients in several abundance ratios, indicating that the fraction of iron from SN Ia increases toward the cluster center and that the dominant metal enrichment mechanism near the center must be different than in the outer parts.

Analysis of spatially resolved ASCA spectra of the intracluster gas in Abell 496 confirms there are mild metal abundance enhancements near the center, as previously found by White et al. (1994) in a joint analysis of Ginga LAC and Einstein SSS spectra. Simultaneous analysis of spectra from all ASCA instruments (SIS + GIS) shows that the iron abundance is 0.36 ± 0.03 solar 3 − 12 ′ from the cent...

متن کاملMetal Enrichment of the ICM: a 3-D Picture of Chemical and Dynamical Properties
We develop a model for the metal enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM) that combines a cosmological non-radiative hydrodynamical N-Body/SPH simulation of a cluster of galaxies, and a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. The novel feature of our hybrid model is that the chemical properties of the diffuse gas in the underlying simulation are dynamically and consistently generated from s...
متن کاملRecovering true metal abundances of the ICM
Recovering the true average abundance of the intracluster medium (ICM) is crucial for estimates of its global metal content, which in turn is linked to its past evolution and to the star formation history of the stellar component of the cluster. We analyze here how abundance gradients affect commonly adopted estimates of the average abundance, assuming various plausible ICM density and temperat...

Context. The origin and evolution of the intracluster medium (ICM) are still not fully understood. A better understanding is not only interesting in its own right, but it is also important for modeling hierarchical structure growth and for using cluster surveys to determine cosmological parameters. Aims. To determine if there exists any evidence for evolution in the temperature or iron abundanc...
